Incoming Freshman Scholarship Application
The Ball State Department of Journalism awards nearly $8,000 in incoming freshman scholarships each year. Award amounts range between $500-$2,500, depending on scholarship criteria. To apply, please complete the following online application. Paper-based applications and portfolios will no longer be accepted. The department reserves the right to adjust scholarship offerings and amounts due to available funding. Renewable scholarships are awarded as funding becomes available. Scholarship awards are contingent upon admission to the university, GPA and other scholarship-specific requirements. Renewable awards are contingent on continuing a major in the Department of Journalism, GPA and other scholarship-specific requirements.

Robert L. and Sherles K. Barnet Scholarship:
$500 scholarship can be renewed for three additional years. The scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman declaring intentions to major in journalism. The recipient must have earned a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. He or she must maintain full-time status while receiving the scholarship. If the recipient leaves the study of journalism, he or she will no longer be eligible for the award.
Holmes-McFadden Journalism Scholarship:
Preference will be given to an incoming minority student who plans to major in the Department of Journalism. The $1,000 scholarship can be renewed for three additional years by maintaining a GPA of at least a 2.7 on a 4.0 scale and approval of the Ball State department chairperson.
Louis E. Ingelhart Scholarship:
Granted by the Journalism Alumni Association; gives a $1,500 one-time, non-renewable award to an exceptional student journalist who demonstrates outstanding high school journalism service and has a strong commitment to professional journalism.
Michael Smith Scholarship:
$1,000 scholarship can be renewed for three additional years. Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman journalism major with an academic index of 3.0 or higher, or transfer student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Minimum SAT score of 1000 (old system) or 1500 (new system), or an ACT score of 21.
Theresa C. and Leonard S. Sowar Journalism Student Scholarship:
A one-time $500 award established by Mrs. Francis E. Stout in honor of her father and mother. The award is for incoming freshmen to help with the cost of books and supplies. First preference is given to a Muncie resident, second preference to a non-traditional student and then to any entering journalism student.
Bona Cress Press and Lawrence Press Scholarship:
This $2,500 scholarship may be renewed up to three years, if funds are available. If funds are available, the student must remain a major within the journalism department and maintain a 2.6 GPA in order to stay eligible. Preference is given to students from traditionally underrepresented groups, non-Indiana residents, and/or bilingual students.
Freshman Achievement Scholarship:
One-time award of $750. All applicants will be considered. This non-renewable scholarship is awarded by the Department of Journalism and funded by alumni and general scholarship gifts.
